Read what some of our past customers have told us about their visit to The Wortley Arms

30th June 2008
I have visited The Wortley Arms
several times and every time I have walked away
feeling delighted and impressed. The food is wonderful,
rich, sumptuous and priced within a reasonable
budget. The staff are friendly, appear knowledgeable
and offer genuine interest and enthusiasm when
asked about the menu/business. A big plus point
for me is the local ingredients/suppliers that
appear regularly on the menu - a move to be applauded.
The Wortley Arms is one regional eatery I shall
return to regularly.

A very special menu, all fresh
locally sourced ingredients. The wortley wedge
is the roast of the day and served on the bread
of your choice, their special board includes things
like Barnsley Chop, Pan Fried Duck Breast with
Confit dug leg ash and serves the best fresh fish
dishes around. The pub has been opened for just
over 12 months and is getting better and better.

Dear Wortley Arms & Montagus,
Just a little note to say thank you, not least
for the fabulous meal we had at Montagus on Saturday Night (23rd)
but especially to your member of staff who offered to take us
home in the absence of a taxi. This went beyond the call of
duty and was very much appreciated.
All the best and thanks again - The Johnsons. |

First Footers 4th Annual Charity Walk
- Sunday 13th May 2007
Hope you are well,
Thankyou once again to all your team for your
help with organising the catering for the walk this year. Given
the attendance and feedback I'd say it was a huge success.
It was so nice to have your support and excellent
planning and expertise on hand. Made my job a whole lot less
stressful. Please would you also pass on my thanks to the other
suppliers used.
Kind Regards, Jayne Jannatt. |

As I think most of you will know, my 50th
birthday celebrations took place in Montagu's last Wednesday
- Thursday morning.
A motley crew of friends helped me to celebrate that landmark.
I think everyone associated with 'The Do' should be very proud
of what you are beginning to create at Wortley Arms.
Everybody ... The support staff in the kitchen,
those who set up the room, the Front of House team that looked
after the guests, the Chefs who produced the food and not forgetting
those who put the rooms back together again the next morning..
All of you deserve massive thanks and pats on the backs from
myself and Rowena for helping to produce what all my friends
(who can be a 'picky' audience) are already describing as the
party / venue of the year!!
If Wednesday is a reflection of the Wortley
Experience', there will be many more letters being pinned up
on the wall.
Once again, Many Thanks - John McConnell &
Lady Rowena. |

11th May 2007
Just wanted to let you all know that we really
appreciated your support and hospitality on Friday 11th May
(the night before our wedding) in the Wortley Arms. All our
guests who called into the pub for food and/or drinks on the
Friday night all commented on how great it was. This really
means a lot to me as I really wanted to show my husband, family
and friends how wonderful Wortley village is.
Pre-night food in the Wortley Arms, Wedding
in Wortley Church, Flowers from Wortley Nursery and Reception
in Wortley Hall. All of it fabulous!
Please pass on our regards and thanks to all
your staff and we look forward to returning for more food and
drinks in the future!

Despite this being my local restaurant, I
think this is one of the best around Yorkshire at the moment.
I think it compares very favourably to amazing eateries like
the Kayo Arms at Flockton and the Three Acres at Emley. Andy
Gabbitas and his team have done an excellent job of refurbishing
The Wortley Arms Pub and creating this delightful restaurant
above it. It's got so many good things going for it - delightful
food, amazing taste experiences throughout, delicious wines
to choose from, a very intimate and personal dining experience
and beautiful surroundings looking out onto the pretty norman
church in the village.

Yorkshire Life's Food & Wine section
- Restaurant Review, Feb 2007
When a favourite village pub is taken over
by a Masterchef of Great Britain, locals often fear it will
become yet another gastro pub. But Chef Andy Gabbitas hopes
to allay any fears at the Wortley Arms, which he opened towards
the end of last year.
The pub sits at the centre of the picturesque village of Wortley,
north of Sheffield, on the fringe of the Peak District. "The
locals feared another poncey dining pub, but I hope I have calmed
those doubts", says Gabbitas.
And it seems he has. Not only does the pub have a comfortable
cosy dining area, complete with open fire and dark wood panelling,
there is also a proper Tap Room for drinkers only, with card
games and darts. And the folk club is back. Anything that might
be 'poncey' is in the upstairs restaurant, Montagus. In contrast
to the classic pub downstairs, Montagu's is sleek, modern and
elegant with a dramatic colour scheme in burnt orange and black.
We arrive to eat on a windswept, rainy Sunday lunchtime. But
there is a warm welcome and within seconds we are seated, drinks
ordered and menus handed to us.
The menu is comprehensive including nibbles, starters, soup
& sandwiches and homemade burgers plus main dishes. There
are specials with a culinary twist; fillet steak, kidney and
pease pudding, slow cooked Penistone lamb with black pudding
and Yorkshire feta. Vegetarians are well catered for and children
can enjoy half sized portions.
Gabbitas has purposefully set about finding most of the ingredients
for the menu locally, Doncaster being the furthest some of the
meat must travel.
The beers are also from regional breweries, Black Sheep, Wentworth
and the there are regular guest ales to choose from. The wine
list offers respectable quaffing wines by the glass up to a
civilised bottle of decent New World.
Sunday, for me, is all about a roast, Yorkshire puddings, good
gravy and fresh vegetables. I had almost all these at the Wortley
Arms. I ask for rare beef which could have been a problem in
the kitchen because the roast, as is usual, is cooked in advance.
But chef clearly looked for the rarest slices as each is rosy
pink and full of flavour. My only slight gripe is the gravy.
This is more in the style of a jus, full of meaty flavour but
not deep enough to work with the Yorkshire puddings.
It looks set to be a destination venue in the area for food
and good service in splendid surroundings. I will certainly
return, in fact I look forward to it.
